ocr: Up until Gengis Khan, Mongolian was entirely an oral language. Khan quickly realised the need for written orders to be sent throughout his vast empire. He - adapted Turkish script to the Mongolian language. With the introduction of Lamaism in the 16th Century, Mongolian was relegated to a purely administrative function, with Tibetan the preferred anguage - of culture, religion and learning.
